Ingredients

  • 6 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (divided)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine blackberries, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss gently to coat.
  3. Pour blackberry mixture into a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  6. Stir in milk until just combined. Do not overmix.
  7. Drop spoonfuls of biscuit topping over the blackberry mixture.
  8. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until topping is golden brown and fruit is bubbly.
  9. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
  • If using frozen blackberries, do not thaw them before baking.
  • For a richer flavor, add a squeeze of lemon juice to the blackberry mixture.
