Description
This recipe offers a delightful twist on classic sloppy joes, using crispy Texas Toast instead of traditional buns for a satisfying crunch and hearty meal. It’s a quick and easy dish perfect for a weeknight dinner or a casual gathering.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 8 slices Texas Toast
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
Instructions
- In a large skillet, cook ground beef, onion, and green bell pepper over medium heat until beef is browned and vegetables are tender. Drain off any excess fat.
- Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.
- While the sloppy joe mixture simmers, preheat a large griddle or skillet over medium heat.
- Brush one side of each Texas Toast slice with melted butter.
- Place buttered side down on the hot griddle. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
- Spoon the sloppy joe mixture generously over four slices of the toasted Texas Toast.
- Top with the remaining four slices of Texas Toast to create sandwiches. Serve immediately.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add a dash of your favorite hot sauce to the sloppy joe mixture.
- If you don’t have Texas Toast, thick-cut bread can be used, buttered and toasted.
- Leftover sloppy joe mixture can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
