  • Yield: 4 servings 1x
  • Diet: Halal

Description

This recipe offers a delightful twist on classic sloppy joes, using crispy Texas Toast instead of traditional buns for a satisfying crunch and hearty meal. It’s a quick and easy dish perfect for a weeknight dinner or a casual gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 slices Texas Toast
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, cook ground beef, onion, and green bell pepper over medium heat until beef is browned and vegetables are tender. Drain off any excess fat.
  2. Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.
  3. While the sloppy joe mixture simmers, preheat a large griddle or skillet over medium heat.
  4. Brush one side of each Texas Toast slice with melted butter.
  5. Place buttered side down on the hot griddle. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture generously over four slices of the toasted Texas Toast.
  7. Top with the remaining four slices of Texas Toast to create sandwiches. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a dash of your favorite hot sauce to the sloppy joe mixture.
  • If you don’t have Texas Toast, thick-cut bread can be used, buttered and toasted.
  • Leftover sloppy joe mixture can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
