Description
This brown gravy recipe is incredibly simple and doesn’t require any meat drippings. It’s perfect for a quick and flavorful addition to any meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt to taste
- Black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
- Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until a light golden roux forms.
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth until smooth and no lumps remain.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring occasionally, until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency. This usually takes 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in the onion powder and garlic powder.
- Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
- Serve hot.
Notes
- For a richer color, you can cook the roux a bit longer until it’s a darker brown.
- If the gravy is too thick, whisk in a little more beef broth until it reaches your desired consistency.
- If the gravy is too thin, you can make a slurry of 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon cold water and whisk it into the simmering gravy until it thickens.
