Description
A simple recipe for classic ground beef sloppy joes.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
- 4 hamburger buns
Instructions
- Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess fat.
- Add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the ketchup, water, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, salt, and pepper.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly.
- Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the hamburger buns. Serve immediately.
Notes
- For a tangier flavor, substitute 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar for 1 tablespoon of water.
- You can add 1/2 cup of finely chopped green bell pepper with the onion for extra vegetable content.
