Description

A simple recipe for classic ground beef sloppy joes.


Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess fat.
  2. Add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in the ketchup, water, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, salt, and pepper.
  4. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly.
  5. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the hamburger buns. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a tangier flavor, substitute 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar for 1 tablespoon of water.
  • You can add 1/2 cup of finely chopped green bell pepper with the onion for extra vegetable content.
