- 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes
- 1 cup sliced onion
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Grease a 2-quart baking dish.
- Layer half of the potatoes and half of the onion in the prepared dish.
- In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth.
- Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until thickened.
- Remove from heat and stir in the cheese, salt, and pepper until the cheese is melted.
- Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potato and onion layers.
- Top with the remaining potatoes and onion.
- Pour the remaining cheese sauce over the top.
- Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, use half-and-half instead of milk.
- Add a pinch of nutmeg for an extra layer of flavor.
- You can add cooked ham or bacon for a heartier dish.
