Description

A classic recipe for creamy, cheesy scalloped potatoes.


Ingredients

  • 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes
  • 1 cup sliced onion
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a 2-quart baking dish.
  3. Layer half of the potatoes and half of the onion in the prepared dish.
  4. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  5. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
  6. Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth.
  7. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until thickened.
  8. Remove from heat and stir in the cheese, salt, and pepper until the cheese is melted.
  9. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potato and onion layers.
  10. Top with the remaining potatoes and onion.
  11. Pour the remaining cheese sauce over the top.
  12. Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use half-and-half instead of milk.
  • Add a pinch of nutmeg for an extra layer of flavor.
  • You can add cooked ham or bacon for a heartier dish.
