Description
A simple recipe for cooking flavorful dirty rice entirely in one pot.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 pound ground pork sausage
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 2 celery stalks, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 cup long-grain white rice, uncooked
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 cup chopped green onions, for garnish
Instructions
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.
- Add the ground pork sausage and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off excess grease.
- Add the chopped onion, bell pepper, and celery to the pot. Cook until the vegetables soften, about 5 to 7 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic, thyme, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Add the uncooked rice to the pot and stir to coat it with the sausage and vegetable mixture. Cook for 2 minutes.
- Pour in the chicken broth and Worcestershire sauce. Bring the mixture to a boil.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot tightly, and simmer for 20 minutes, or until all the liquid is absorbed and the rice is tender. Do not lift the lid during simmering.
- Remove the pot from the heat and let it stand, covered, for 5 minutes.
- Fluff the rice with a fork and garnish with chopped green onions before serving.
Notes
- Rinse the rice before using if you prefer a less sticky texture.
- Adjust cayenne pepper amount based on your preference for heat.
