Description

Fried mozzarella sandwiches, a simple Italian appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices Italian bread
  • 8 oz fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Place mozzarella slices between the bread slices to make four sandwiches. Trim crusts if desired.
  2. In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk.
  3. In another shallow dish, mix the flour, salt, and pepper.
  4. Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a deep skillet to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Dip each sandwich first into the egg mixture, coating both sides completely.
  6. Next, dredge the sandwich in the flour mixture, pressing lightly so the flour adheres.
  7. Carefully place the sandwiches in the hot oil. Fry for 2 to 3 minutes per side, until golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  8. Remove the sandwiches with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  9. Cut each sandwich in half diagonally before serving.

Notes

  • Use low-moisture mozzarella if you prefer less liquid cheese.
  • Serve immediately while hot.
