Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup warm milk (105-115°F)
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 4 ½ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
- ¼ teaspoon ground allspice
- ½ cup packed brown sugar
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- For the Maple Frosting:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2–3 tablespoons milk
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm milk and yeast. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Stir in granulated sugar, salt, eggs, and melted butter.
- Gradually add flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- While dough rises, mix cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice in a small bowl.
- Punch down dough and roll it into a 12×18 inch rectangle on a lightly floured surface.
- Spread softened butter evenly over the dough, leaving a ½ inch border on one long side.
- Sprinkle the spice mixture and brown sugar evenly over the butter.
- Starting from the long side with butter and sugar, tightly roll up the dough. Pinch the seam to seal.
- Cut the roll into 12 equal slices.
- Place slices cut-side up in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan. Cover and let rise for 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While rolls bake, prepare the frosting: Beat powdered sugar, softened butter, maple syrup, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add milk 1 tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached.
- Spread frosting over warm cinnamon rolls.
Notes
- For a stronger gingerbread flavor, add 1 tablespoon of molasses to the dough.
- Ensure your butter is softened, not melted, for the filling.
- Adjust maple syrup in frosting to your sweetness preference.
