Description
A classic Boston cream pie with a rich custard filling and chocolate glaze.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- For the Custard:
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 4 large egg yolks
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- For the Chocolate Glaze:
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- While the cakes cool, prepare the custard. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the milk, sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract until smooth. Cover the surface of the custard directly with plastic wrap to prevent a skin from forming and let it cool.
- Once the cakes are completely cool, place one cake layer on your serving plate. Spread the cooled custard evenly over the cake layer.
- Top with the second cake layer.
- Prepare the chocolate glaze. In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the chocolate chips and butter, stirring until smooth.
- Pour the glaze over the top of the cake, allowing it to drip down the sides.
- Chill the cake for at least 30 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Ensure your milk is at room temperature for the cake batter for better incorporation.
- For a smoother custard, you can strain it after cooking.
- If you prefer a thicker glaze, use less butter.
