  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

Homemade Saltwater Taffy Rolls offer a delightful chewy treat, perfect for candy enthusiasts. This recipe guides you through creating soft, flavorful taffy that can be rolled and cut into individual pieces.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Combine sugar, corn syrup, water, butter, and salt in a heavy-bottomed saucepan.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.
  3. Increase heat to medium-high and bring to a boil. Do not stir after it boils.
  4. Insert a candy thermometer and cook until the mixture reaches 250 degrees Fahrenheit (121 degrees Celsius).
  5. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and food coloring, if using.
  6. Pour the hot taffy mixture onto a buttered baking sheet or silicone mat.
  7. Allow the taffy to cool until it is comfortable to handle, about 15-20 minutes.
  8. Butter your hands generously. Begin pulling the taffy, stretching and folding it repeatedly until it becomes opaque and firm, about 15-20 minutes.
  9. Once pulled, stretch the taffy into long ropes, about 1/2 inch in diameter.
  10. Lightly dust a clean surface with cornstarch. Place the taffy ropes on the dusted surface.
  11. Cut the ropes into 1-inch pieces using buttered scissors or a knife.
  12. Wrap each piece of taffy in wax paper or parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  13. Store taffy in an airtight container at room temperature.

Notes

  • Use a reliable candy thermometer for accurate temperature readings.
  • Butter your hands well before pulling the taffy to prevent sticking.
  • The pulling process is crucial for the taffy’s texture.
  • Experiment with different flavorings and food colorings.
  • Store in a cool, dry place to maintain freshness.
