Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup diced cooked ham
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm milk. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
  3. Add the yeast mixture and melted butter to the flour mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and roll it into a rectangle on a floured surface.
  7. Sprinkle the cheese and diced ham evenly over the dough.
  8. Roll up the dough tightly from the long side.
  9. Pinch the seam to seal. Form the roll into a ring, pressing the ends together.
  10. Place the ring on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  11. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  12. Brush the top of the ring with the beaten egg.
  13. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  14. Let cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute Gruyere or Swiss cheese for cheddar.
  • Add a pinch of black pepper to the filling for extra flavor.
  • For a softer crust, you can brush the bread with melted butter after baking.
