Description

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper.
  2. In a separate small bowl, whisk the egg and milk together.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined; do not overmix.
  4. Gently fold in the mozzarella and cheddar cheeses. The batter will be thick.
  5. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep, heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Carefully drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, working in small batches.
  7. Fry for 2 to 3 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and cooked through.
  8. Remove the cheese balls with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  9. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • You can substitute other firm, shreddable cheeses for mozzarella or cheddar.
  • Maintain the oil temperature between 340°F and 360°F for best results.
