Description
A recipe for rich, homemade hot chocolate flavored with caramel.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- 2 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- Whipped cream for topping (optional)
- Extra caramel sauce for drizzling (optional)
Instructions
- Combine milk and heavy cream in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Heat until small bubbles form around the edges, but do not boil.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat. Whisk in the granulated sugar until dissolved.
- Add the chopped bittersweet chocolate to the warm milk mixture. Let it sit for one minute, then whisk until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth.
- Stir in the caramel sauce, vanilla extract, and salt.
- Return the saucepan to low heat and warm through for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly. Do not let it boil.
- Pour the hot chocolate into mugs. Top with whipped cream and an extra drizzle of caramel sauce, if desired.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, use high-quality dark chocolate.
- Adjust the amount of caramel sauce based on your sweetness preference.
- You can substitute dairy milk with your preferred non-dairy alternative, adjusting the creaminess as needed.
