Description

A simple baked pasta dish featuring ground beef, rigatoni, and a rich cheese sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 12 ounces rigatoni pasta
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess fat.
  3. Add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook until soft, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
  5. Add the crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer the sauce for 10 minutes.
  6. While the sauce simmers, cook the rigatoni according to package directions until al dente. Drain well.
  7. In a medium bowl, mix together the ricotta cheese, half of the mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, and the egg. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
  8. In a large bowl, combine the cooked pasta, the meat sauce, and the cheese mixture. Stir until everything is evenly coated.
  9. Transfer the pasta mixture to the prepared baking dish.
  10. Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese over the top.
  11. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the edges are lightly browned.

Notes

  • For a smoother texture, you can substitute cottage cheese for ricotta cheese.
  • You can add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the sauce for a little heat.
  • Let the bake rest for 5 minutes after removing it from the oven before serving.
