  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the applesauce, sugar, and shortening until light and fluffy.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Fold in the chopped nuts and raisins, if using.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
