Moist and flavorful applesauce cake based on a traditional Amish recipe.
Ingredients

- 1 cup applesauce
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
- 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- In a large bowl, cream together the applesauce, sugar, and shortening until light and fluffy.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Fold in the chopped nuts and raisins, if using.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, use homemade applesauce.
- You can substitute butter for the shortening.
- Add a simple glaze or dusting of powdered sugar once cooled.
